All candidates who hold at least a baccalaureate degree in education from a regionally accredited college or university and who seek an initial Virginia teaching license must obtain passing scores on professional (content) teacher’s assessments prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education. In addition, individuals seeking their first teaching licensure must demonstrate proficiency in the communication, literacy, and other core skills for educators by achieving a qualifying score on professional assessments or meeting alternatives evaluation standards as prescribed by the board. With the exception of the career switcher program that requires assessments as prerequisites, individuals must complete the professional teacher’s assessment requirements within the three-year validity of the initial Provisional License.
