Traditional Certification Route (OH)

To become a licensed teacher in Ohio, the applicant must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and have completed an approved, traditional teacher preparation program through an accredited college/university. The applicants are expected to successfully pass examinations prescribed by State Board of Education. Depending upon the content area, the tests for initial licensure are the Ohio Assessment for Educators, the ACTFL/LTI examinations for candidates who wish to teach world languages, and Praxis assessments in selected areas. Licenses of the initial tier are 4-year renewable and extendable; the rest are 5-year renewable. Some licenses require professional development or continuing education credits for renewal. Certain educators with professional, lead professional, or senior professional teaching licenses may not need to complete additional coursework or equivalent continuing education credits to renew their educator licenses. Each local professional development committee will if an applicant meets the eligibility criteria for the consistently high-performing teacher (CHPT) designation as they review professional licensure renewal requests.
