Overview

While some certificates such as Non-Renewable Professional, Permit, and International Exchange certificates remain outside the tiered certification structure, most Georgia educator certificates fall into one of the following four tiers: (1) Pre-service; (2) Induction; (3) Professional; and (4) Advanced/Lead professional. ThPre-Service tier is intended for educator candidates completing field experiences or student teaching in Georgia schools. It must be requested on behalf of the candidate by the college, university, or other institution providing the educator preparation program. The Pre-Service certificate is valid for as many as 5 years, and may be extended at the request of the educator preparation provider. Holding a Pre-Service certificate is not a pre-requisite to qualify for any other Georgia certificate. Upon completion of a Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC)-approved educator preparation program in the state of Georgia, the individual qualifies for an Induction certificateThe fourth tier includes two different certificates designed for classroom teachers: Advanced Professional and Lead Professional. The Advanced Professional certificate is for teachers who demonstrate expert classroom practice, and the Lead Professional certificate is for teachers who are leaders of their peers. For additional information about certification, please, consult  the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC)
