Candidates must complete an educator preparation program (college/university or non-traditional program) in order to teach in Idaho. There are a variety of educator preparation programs, approved in Idaho, which include college and university as well as non-traditional programs. There is no tiered system of certification in Idaho. The graduates of a traditional program apply for the initial certification, which they must renew every 5 years. Interim certification is valid for no more than three (3) years total, and is only used in specific cases, where temporary licensing is needed. For additional information about certification, please, consult the Idaho State Department of Education.
