Candidates who hold a Bachelor’s (or higher) degree, but who have not completed an approved preparation program through a regionally accredited institution of higher education, may be eligible to participate in an Alternative Certification Program and work toward standard, Professional certification while simultaneously holding employment in a South Carolina public school. Drawing upon bachelor’s degree-holding teacher candidates identified by school districts, alternative programs provides a combination of coursework and micro-credentials to address the real-time needs of teachers, while offering a co-teaching model to lend additional support to candidates. There are a number of alternative certification programs, such as the Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE), Teach for America, Teachers of Tomorrow, Carolina Collaborative for Alternative Preparation (Carolina CAP) among several others.
