The Traditional route starts off with the Initial license. Graduates of Iowa-approved teacher preparatory programs typically apply directly for this license type. In cases when one or more of the required assessments are not yet completed, and the candidate has a position offer in a Iowa school district, a Temporary Initial Teaching license is issued. When the experience requirements are met (two years of successful teaching in an Iowa public school, or 3 years in an accredited private or out-of-state setting) a holder of an Initial Teaching License or Regional Exchange Teaching license converts to a Standard Teaching License holder.
