The Eligibility Statement is required prior to employment in a school and participation in the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program.

Kentucky applicants must complete a 4-year teacher program that includes student teaching and testing when applicable.

Kentucky requires a recommendation from the certification official at the college/university (where the applicant completed his/her initial teacher program, student teaching) regarding the teacher program completed, grade level, degree level, and completion date of the program.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

GPA: 2.5

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.
The following is required for this route:

A cumulative GPA of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale OR a GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale on the last sixty (60) hours of credit completed.

In lieu of the Core Academic Skills for Educators exams, the teacher program may allow the GRE exam for admission to an initial certification program at the graduate level. Candidates should check with the EPP regarding admissions policies.

In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Background Check

Renewal: Renewable
The SOE allows candidates five years to apply and receive employment as a teacher in a Kentucky school. During the first year of employment, the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) must be successfully completed. If the internship is not completed within the five (5) year period, the applicant may renew the SOE by repeating and passing the assessment program in effect for new teachers at that time or by completing a minimum of six (6) graduate hours toward completion of a graduate program. The option for renewal through completion of graduate hours shall be available only for the first renewal.
