In 2009, Ohio restructured its teacher licensure system and established a new career ladder for educators. The first tier is a Resident Educator or an Alternative Resident Educator license tier. After having completed 4 years of the Resident Educator Program, the teacher may advance to the five-year professional license, which is the second tier of the licensure structure. The Senior Professional Educator License is the third tier, and is the first of the two advanced educator certification tiers, which require an earned master’s degree, nine years under a standard teaching license, and successful completion of the Master Teacher Portfolio. Those Senior Educator License holders who have earned the Teacher Leader Endorsement by the Ohio Department of Education qualify for the most advanced level of educator licensure – the Lead Professional Educator License.
