The state of Maine has a straightforward 2-tier certification system. New teachers, who have completed a state-approved educator program or an alternative pathway to certification, typically qualify for a Conditional Certification. More experienced teachers with 5 of the last 7 years of teaching experience under the endorsement sought are eligible for a Professional Certification. Requirements for endorsements vary. There are more than 150 different endorsements for Administrators, Education Specialists, Teachers, and CTE Teachers in Maine, each with its own requirements. Refer to certification requirements here to help guide decisions on the endorsement(s) to pursue. For additional information about certification, consult the Maine Department of Education.
