A bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited college/university is a base requirement for teacher certification in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania currently has two levels of certification. The initial certificate, Level I, is valid for a specific number of service years, during which time the educator must complete established requirements. Educators holding a Level I certificate must provide evidence of 24 semester hour post-baccalaureate credits, six (6) of which must be associated with the area(s) of certification and/or designed to improve the professional practice. Upon completion of those requirements, the Level I certificate may be converted to a Level II certificate. If not converted, the Level I certification expires. For additional information about certification, please, consult the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
