The state of Indiana has a two-tiered certification system. The newly educated teacher must first apply for an Initial Practitioner License, which is valid for 2 years and can be renewed up to 2 times. Upon expiration of the initial license, the teacher must apply to advance to a (Full) Practitioner License. There are two routes for advancing to the Practitioner License: through the Professional Growth Plan (PGP); or through the traditional Indiana Mentor and Assessment Program (IMAP). The Professional License is valid for 5 or 10 years. To teach in an accredited school in Indiana, one must hold a valid Indiana License. For additional information about certification, please, consult the Office of Educator Licensing of the Indiana Department of Education.
