The teachers employed in New Jersey are expected to obtain a Standard Certificate in the area of endorsement. The first step to certification is obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) or Certificate of Eligibility (CE). These certificates allow the candidate to seek and accept offers of employment as teachers in public schools. The Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) is typically awarded to candidates, who have completed a traditional teacher preparation program, while the Certificate of Eligibility (CE) is for those individuals who have not completed a formal teacher preparation program, but wish to obtain the necessary training to become a NJ certified teacher. When a candidate is hired, the district/school must register the candidate into the he Provisional Teacher Process (PTP) program and a 2-year Provisional certificate is issued. All novice teachers must complete the PTP program in which they are evaluated, supported, mentored and supervised by their district while working under provisional certificates. After completion of the PTP, a teacher may be recommended for a standard certificate.

New Jersey does not limit the selection of languages for certification, as the school districts may offer any language(s) they feel meets the needs and desires of community members to prepare students for 21st Century careers.  For additional information about certification, please, consult the State Board of Examiners Office of Certification and Induction.
