The alternative resident educator license is an accelerated pathway to classroom teaching for the professionals who have already earned a bachelor or a master’s degree. To initiate the application process the candidate must undergo an Initial Evaluation of their educational credentials, exam scores (if applicable), as well as a background check through the Office of Educator Licensure. Prior to registering for an approved Alternative Licensure Program, the applicants pursuing licensure in World Languages Candidates must complete the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) for their specific world language licensure areas. Contact the Office of Educator Licensure to request a confirmation registration letter for enrollment purposes when you have met the requirements (per the initial evaluation) in order to enroll in an approved Alternative Licensure Institute, including the Intensive Pedagogical Training Institute (IPTI), or an Alternative Resident Educator Institute (AREI) approved by the Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education. Note, that most Alternative Licensure Institute programs are non-degree granting. Upon employment in an Ohio school/district, candidates apply for the alternative resident educator license (as listed on their statements of eligibility) through their OH|ID accounts. Upon meeting all of the requirements for licensure and the length of employment, this license can be advanced to a five-year professional license.
