Alternative preparation programs in Maryland (or Maryland Approved Alternative Preparation Programs (MAAPP)) differ from traditional programs in that alternative preparation leads to teacher certification, but not necessarily to a degree. MAAPPs allow one to begin teaching and receiving a salary much earlier than with traditional routes. Often the local school system (LSS) that sponsors the MAAPP covers much of the cost of the MAAPP itself. A Resident Teacher Certificate (RTC) is granted at the request of a local school superintendent to individuals who participate in a MAAPP. The RTC is valid for 2 years; it is not portable among Maryland LSS nor does it transfer to other states.
