Upon completion of a state-approved teacher-training program a brand-new educator with fewer than 4 years of teaching experience qualifies for an Initial License, and then transitions to a Continuing License (with 4 or more years of teaching experience). The highest tier of the 3-tier licensure is the Advanced License, which is issued to any educator who receives a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification. Upon completion of a state-approved or state-recognized teacher education program and passing all required examinations, an individual is eligible to apply for a Standard Certificate. Educators with less than one year of licensed teaching experience are also required to pass an approved Performance Assessment within two years of being hired and issued a Delaware initial teaching license. Candidates with more than one year but less than four years of licensed teaching experience are exempt from this requirement.
