The state of Colorado’s traditional route to certification starts with the Initial Teacher License, which requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, completion of an approved preparation program, and demonstration of content-area knowledge by exam (French, German, Latin, Chinese-Mandarin, Spanish) or a degree in the content area (ASL, Italian, Japanese, or Russian). After three years of teaching experience and completion of a Colorado State Board of Education-approved induction program, the Initial license-holder can qualify for a Professional Teacher License. Master certificate is the higher level of teaching license, which can be awarded to experienced teacher upon meeting certain criteria.
